Flyers don pink to raise funds, awareness at ‘Pink at the Rink’ Oct. 6

By Pat Bailey
The Leamington Flyers will be in the pink when they host the London Nationals on Oct. 6 at 7:10 p.m.
Once again, the Flyers will be donning their hot pink jerseys at their annual 'Pink at the Rink' event to raise funds for breast cancer research.
Their jerseys, which have become synonymous with their support for the cause, will be auctioned off during the game, as well as additional silent auction items.
A 'pink bake sale' of cupcakes and everything pink, will give Flyers' fans a chance to support the cause while treating their tastebuds.
Deb Jones Chambers, breast cancer survivor and president of the local Canadian Cancer Society Chapter, is helping organize the special evening and is asking all fans to support the event by wearing pink.
"Our little town is doing big things in the battle against cancer," said Jones Chambers. "It is our hope that by bringing more attention to the disease we can educate families about the resources that are available to them."
In addition to the Pink at the Rink, Leamington will also play host to 'Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer', a one or five-kilometre family walk/run, on Oct. 16 at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex.
Jones Chambers said the theme this year is the 'boxing ring' — fight cancer with a donation.
She said participants are urged to dress in their finest pink. Individuals who raise at least $100 in pledges receive an event t-shirt and the top fundraisers will be recognized for their efforts with a 'Pink Spirit Award'.
Last year's walk raised more than $50,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Jones Chambers said the local fundraising efforts have grown over the years and "we believe that is proof that the message is spreading".  To read more go to www.leamingtonpostandshopper.com.
