The Leamington-Mersea Planning Board is considering a proposal for a neighborhood shopping mall on Oak Street East and the corner of Plumbrook. A spokesman for Major Holdings and Development Ltd. asked council for an amendment in zoning to allow it to proceed. The company is proposing a shopping centre with about 40,000 square feet of floor space and parking for 200 vehicles.

Essex South MPP Remo Mancini has asked the Minister of Revenue to take action against antique dealers who are using yard sales as 'fronts' to avoid having to charge sales tax.

Jean Chretien, a member of the federal cabinet, spoke to about 150 Liberal supporters covering several topics last week, including problems with Quebec. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce was the guest at the $50 a plate fundraising event for the Essex-Kent Liberal Association. In a cabinet shuffle, he became the Finance Minister on Friday.

Point Pelee National Park has begun work on its first water supply system. Park Superintende Dave MacEachern said there has never been any central system with each facility in the park having its own well and pump.

Downtown merchants of Leamington will make their final decision on whether they want the core area to be designated as a business improvement district at next week's meeting.

Two sisters, 2,500 miles apart, were reunited in Leamington last week. In 1919 Mary King left England and never had the opportunity to return. On Tuesday, her sister, Ethel Stone arrive in Leamington for a visit.

Wheatley's Peewee team captured the OBA 'B' division on the weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. Members of the winning team include, Doug Beleutz, George Imeson, Hal Dundas, Jim Heyens, Paul Stevenson, Len McLounie, Amy Bell, Shelly Beleutz, Brent Chadwick, Clair Anderson, Tim McIntosh, Mike Simpson, Bob Beattie, Ron Prudence, coaches, Mark OmsteadLynn Bailey, Wayne Beattie, manager Brad Bailey and scorekeeper Lynn Bailey.

The Essex 73s downed the Leamington Flyers 4-1 in pre-season Junior C action last week. Bob Taylor scored the lone Flyer goal, assisted by Bill Hewett and Dale Dunmore.
