Police arrest suspect in seven-year-old Wheatley break-in
It took nearly seven years, but a London man has been arrested in relation to a break-in in at a Wheatley business, thanks to DNA evidence.
According to the Chatham Kent Police Service, they were called to Franklin Net and Twine on Talbot Trail on Oct. 8, 2004, to investigate a break-in.
Police said $60 cash and a cell phone were taken. The cell phone was found outside the building and DNA evidence was collected at the scene and sent to the Centre of Forensic Science for analysis.
A DNA profile was established but at that time no matches existed in the database
But police said recently, the 38-year-old suspect became involved with the criminal justice system and his DNA profile was uploaded to the datebase. His profile was compared to outstanding crimes across the province and he came up a match that connected him to the Wheatley break-in.
He was charged with breaking and entering. He appeared in bail court last week and was remanded into custody.
